A sequel in the Electronic Arts Battlefield franchise, it was released in early June 2005 to critical and popular success. With a mixture of strategy and FPS elements, it utilizes a new engine for gameplay, physics, and graphics, as well as other functions. The game received an aggregate score of 90% from reviewers and topped the PC game sales charts from June to August 2005. Battlefield 2 is often compared to the popular Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. Both games take place in modern times and, after the acquisition of Desert Combat developer Trauma Studios by Digital Illusions CE (DICE), developers that worked on Desert Combat went to work on Battlefield 2. The battles, however, only feature USMC versus MEC and USMC versus China. The armies use modern weaponry: The Marines use well-known American weaponry such as the M1 Abrams tank and the M4 Carbine assault rifle, the Chinese mostly use Chinese-made copies of Soviet weapons (such as the Chinese Type 56 Assault Rifle, though the game calls it an AK-47), and the Middle Eastern Coalition use mostly Russian weapons. The various forces still use the trademark feature of the Battlefield series - the large stable of vehicles that any player, regardless of faction, specialty or experience, can climb into and control. Battlefield 2 was originally scheduled to be released on March 21, 2005, but was delayed until June 22, 2005 for North America, and June 24, 2005 for Europe and Australia. A game for consoles with a similar theme also exists. Named Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, although the game is quite different in execution and gameplay than the PC games. Official Expansion Pack Main article The official expansion pack for Battlefield 2, "Battlefield 2: Special Forces," adds many new features. Some of these include: nightvision, grappling hooks, ziplines; new vehicles such the ATV, Jet-Ski, Desert Raider, and BMP; new helicopters: the Apache Longbow and the Russian Hind; and a few new weapons, including the SCAR-L, F2000 with grenade launcher and flashbang, G36E, and the MP7. 6 new teams are also added: Russian Spetsnaz, British SAS, Rebels, and Insurgents. In addition to these features, new maps are also added: Devil's Perch (nighttime map; USA vs. MEC Special Forces), Leviathan (nighttime map; USA vs. MEC Special Forces), Night Flight (nighttime map; British vs. Insurgents), Ghost Town (Russian vs. British), Mass Destruction (Russian vs. Rebels), Iron Gator (USA vs. MEC Special Forces), Surge (Russian vs. Rebels), and Warlod (British vs. Insurgents). This expansion pack was developed by DICE Canada, the same makers as Battlefield Vietnam. Demo A demo is available for download from major game sites featuring a single map ("Gulf of Oman") for both single-player and multi-player. The 16-person version of the map has a time limit of 10 minutes. the 32-person version has a time limit of 12 minutes. The 64-person version is unavailable in the demo, though up to 64 players can still play on the 32-person map. The demo also limits players to using stock weapons with each kit. It was discovered soon after the demo release that code could be modified to circumvent some of the limits imposed on the demo. These included removing the time limit, as well as allowing players to use all locked weapons. EA quickly responded by delisting servers that were running with such modifications. New features Battlefield 2 screenshot New gameplay engine, realistic physics and dynamic lighting, material penetration feature, destructible environments. Server admins can set maps to use 16, 32 or 64 player versions to provide the ideal vehicle-to-player ratio, custom maps can be made to scale to fit any number of players. Squads: Squads can be locked so that people can only join if they have been invited. Players may be invited to join a squad, if accepted, are then moved into that squad. A max of 6 players can be in one squad (including the squad leader). There can be as many as 9 squads per team. Squad members, not leaders, have a minimal T key menu for requesting orders, artillery, and munitions. All Squad members may use Voice-over IP (VoIP) to talk to each other. Squad Leader Position - Commander and manager of a squad Squad Leaders have an extended T key menu that sends request directly to the Commander and will show up on the Commander screen. Squad Leaders can manage squad by locking or unlocking the squad to new members. Squad Leaders may invite players to join the squad. Squad Leaders can set waypoints and orders. Squad Leaders are mobile spawn points while friendly flags exist. Squad Leaders can talk to the Team Commander. Team Commander Position - strategic role of a battlefield commander directing his forces: Players must "apply". The highest rank gets the position, ties go to a vote. Team Commanders can be voted out by team. The Team Commander is like any other soldier on the battlefield in that he chooses a kit, spawns in, can die, etc. Available to the Team Commander are four assets: Artillery Strike, Satellite Scan, RQ-1 Predator UAV and Supply Drop. Online profiles: Rankings from Private all the way to Second Lieutenant, one's online profile can track kills, weapon usage, medic stats, engineering stats, etc. One can unlock medals, special weapon functions, decals, etc. There is a special access to forums/download servers. Ranking is only available on "official" (EA and EA leased) BF2 servers. Ranking/unlockables can be on all servers, but only EA servers record and send back stats. EA plans to offer more servers worldwide sponsored by ISP's, etc, provided they meet certain requirements. Battlefield Recorder - will allow the ability to record ingame videos: Files are around 1MB in size and are played within the Battlefield 2 engine. Camera angles can be changed, as well as the speed. Files can be exported to AVI format. Radio commands are now displayed on an ingame menu brought up using the Q key: In this mode, the crosshair is replaced with gray circle with radio commands around the circle. If menu is activated while aiming at at an object such as a tank and "Spotted" is clicked, it recognizes the tank and sends out an "enemy armor spotted" radio command. Q key spotted units are displayed on teammates' mini-maps for several seconds. Voice-over IP (VoIP) is supported, which allows players to communicate via audio ingame without the need for third-party programs. Squadmembers can talk to fellow squad members and squad leaders. Squad Leaders can talk to Team Commander or fellow squad members. Team Commander can talk to Squad Leaders. VoIP is not available between maps, but is available during map start delay. VoIP is available while critically wounded, and even when dead. The minimap now shows a white triangle simulating the players' field of view. Custom shortcuts can load up a server with parameters set in the players' profile. Maps Main article: List of Battlefield 2 maps BF2 shipped with 12 maps. Depending on the number of people the server is configured to accommodate, the scope and objectives of maps change. For example, when "Gulf of Oman" is played with only 16 people, it is an infantry and armor combat scenario with 4 objectives to capture. With more players, 2 new bases open up, spawning fighter aircraft and helicopters. Single-player mode only allows access to the former, to the extent that purchasers who are unable or unwilling to play online have no built-in access to many of the game's vehicles, therefore the true value of the game is to play it online. Also, several maps are not available for single-player, such as the "Kubra Dam" map. Snipers pick enemies off from long range with a sniper rifle, and can plant Claymore anti-personnel mines. Spec Ops can destroy structures and vehicles with 5 C-4 explosive charges, and also carry an automatic carbine. Engineers have the wrench, which allows them to repair vehicles (including transports they are riding on), can deploy anti-vehicle mines, and defend themselves with a shotgun. Medics are armed with a standard assault rifle, but also have the ability to heal teammates with medpacks and revive them with a defibrillator, which works like the reviving syringe in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. The defibrillator can also be used to zap enemy soldiers, although the knife is more effective because it does not need to charge up after attacks. Support troops wield a light machine gun that can provide heavy covering fire, and replenish allies' supplies with ammunition packs. Anti-tank soldiers have both a submachine gun and short-range anti-tank rockets, which destroy lighter vehicles easily and can damage even heavily armored tanks and APCs with careful targeting. All classes carry a basic pistol and combat knife, and Spec Ops, Engineer, Support, Medic, and Assault (with unlocked weapon) classes spawn with hand grenades. Experienced players can unlock alternate weapons for each class. For instance, snipers may choose the more powerful M95 sniper rifle (firing .50 BMG ammunition), and Spec Ops can use a H&K G36C carbine instead of the M4 Carbine. On ranked servers, the players must earn points and become promoted to a higher rank in order to unlock a weapon of their choice (one per kit) if they wish to use them. Once unlocked, non-ranked servers can allow or disallow (server side) players from using the weapons they have unlocked on ranked servers. Different classes are also able to sprint for different lengths of time than others, and have different amounts of body armour. Support and Assault classes can sprint for 8 seconds. It only uses a 20 round magazine and does not include the grenade launcher which is attached to the other assault-class weapons. Medic: L85A1: The Medic unlock is a variant of the SA-80. It is one of the standard weapons for the British army. While highly accurate, it has high recoil. This rifle is equipped with a scope. Support: PKM: The Support class unlock is an automatic development of the Kalashnikov automatic rifle design. It carries up to 200 rounds of ammunition. The relatively low rate of fire for this weapon is compensated by its power and accuracy. Sniper: Barrett M95: A .50 caliber bolt-action sniper rifle, extremely powerful and capable of piercing helicopter glass. Has maximum of 5 rounds in its magazine. Anti-Tank: DAO-12: The Anti-Tank unlock is a semi-automatic 12-round shotgun. It must be reloaded one round at a time into a drum magazine, similar to a Colt Peacemaker. Spec-Ops: H&K G36C: The compact variant of the G36 is the unlock for the Special Forces class. When the buttstock is folded, it is just under 500mm long. Engineer: MK3A1 Jackhammer: The Engineer Unlock is one of the few automatic combat shotguns available in the world. It is 12-gauge and is gas-operated. The following unlockables are available with the new patch 1.12. In order to get these unlocks, however, you must already have the base unlock i.e. to get the F2000, you must have the G3 unlock. New Unlockables (These are only available with the Special Forces Expansion Pack) Assault : FN F2000 Engineer : H&K MP7 Medic : H&K G36E Spec Ops : FN SCAR-L Support : H&K MG36 Vehicles USMC Vehicles M1A2 SEP: This main battle tank is the backbone of the US Army's armored forces. Armed with a powerful 120 mm cannon, the M1A2 also has a stabilized fire control system, thermal imaging, a laser range finder, and a digital ballistics computer. It also features steel-encased depleted uranium armor for optimal protection. M6 Bradley Linebacker: The M6 Bradley Linebacker is the Army's mobile antiaircraft unit. Armed with Stinger antiaircraft missiles, the M6 can engage and destroy enemy helicopters, low-flying aircraft, unmanned drones, and even cruise missiles. HMMWV: The High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle is the standard US military transport and truck. Designed as a multipurpose vehicle, it's equipped with a four-wheel-drive automatic transmission and can be transported and air-dropped by helicopter or transport aircraft. FAV: The FAV buggy is a fast attack vehicle designed for agility and firepower. Armed with both light and heavy machine guns, this speedy buggy can assist infantry on the ground, though it's not very effective against armored vehicles. LAV 25: The Marine Corps equivalent of the Army's M2 Bradley, the LAV-25 is an all-terrain light-armored vehicle capable of moving firepower and troops around the battlefield. Fully amphibious and capable of traversing rivers and lakes, it's armed with a 25 mm main gun and two 7.621 machine guns. AH-1Z Super Cobra: The AH-1Z is the latest version of the famous Cobra attack helicopter that dates back to the Vietnam War. The Super Cobra is armed with a 20 mm nose gun, as well as TOW and Hellfire missiles. It's also equipped with countermeasures to protect it from surface-to-air missiles. UH-60 Black Hawk: A medium-lift utility or assault helicopter used by over 20 nations. The game version can carry six people (including pilot and two gunners) and is armed with two very powerful miniguns. F-15E Strike Eagle: The Fighter Bomber variant of the classic McDonnell-Douglas/Boeing F-15A/C Eagle. Designed to supplement the F-16CJ/CG Falcon as a heavy strike platform, capable of carrying a large amount of external stores, such as LGBs (Laser Guided Bombs) JDAMs (Joint Direct Attack Munition), cluster bombs, or, as depicted in the game, dumb bombs. A second crewman has access to laser-guided missiles, used to attack ground vehicles and stationary weapons platforms (such as anti-aircraft emplacements) with great accuracy. F/A-18 Hornet: The McDonnell-Douglas/Boeing F/A-18C was the first aircraft to receive the designation F/A standing for Fighter/Attack. Many websites, as well as EA themselves, have incorrectly identified the plane as the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The E/F (The F is the dual seat version) variant has obvious differences when compared to the F/A-18A/C, including the 25% larger wing area, a longer fuselage, a 35% more powerful engine, angular intakes for the engines (box shaped intakes for the E/F as opposed to the circular ones on the A/C) and two extra wing hardpoints. F-35 Joint Strike Fighter: The F-35B is a multinational fighter that is capable of ground attack, air superiority, and STOVL capability. It only spawns on maps with Amphibious Carriers. Wasp-class Assault Carrier(USS Essex): The mission of the Wasp-class carrier is to transport, deploy, and support US Marine landing forces anywhere in the world. These large amphibious assault carriers provide the equipment and material necessary to sustain prolonged combat operations. It is not drivable in game. RHIB: The RIB is a high-speed extreme-weather vessel designed for the insertion or extraction of special operations teams, such as US Navy SEALs or the Army's Delta Force. LW155 Lightweight 155 mm Howitzer: The LW155 howitzer provides better range, accuracy, and durability than its predecessors, and it's light enough to be air-dropped or towed to any region. BGM-71 TOW: The TOW missile is the most widely used anti-tank missile in the world. Standing for Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided, it can penetrate any known tank armor including the M1A2 Abrams'. FIM-92 Stinger: The Stinger is a infrared homing surface-to-air missile developed and widely used by US armed services. It has a maximum range of almost 16,000 feet. It is fires by a 2-man crew or from the M6 Bradley anti-air vehicle. Chinese Vehicles Type 98: The Type 98 main battle tank is designed for firepower, mobility, and protection on the modern battlefield. Based on Russian and European models, it incorporates a laser range finder, a ballistic computer, and an axis-stabilization system to complement its 125 mm cannon. Wuzhuang Zhisheng 551: The WZ 551 armored personnel carrier is a six-wheeled transport designed to cross rugged terrain. It's armed with a 7.62 mm machine gun and can deploy infantry across the battlefield. Nanjing 2046: The NJ 2046 is a heavy troop transport and field command vehicle. Derived from a civilian minivan, it's been enhanced for use on the battlefield. FAV: China's People's Liberation Army uses the fast attack vehicle for both airborne and special operations. It can be armed with 7.62 mm and 5.8 mm machine guns, or a mounted HJ-8 antitank missile launcher. Type 95: The Type 95 antiaircraft vehicle provides the PLA with air defense. Armed with four 25 mm cannons and four surface-to-air-missile launch tubes, it's a formidable weapon against aircraft. Type 85: The Type 85 is identical to the Russian D-30 artillery piece. This 122 mm gun is an ideal weapon for taking out enemy troops and field shelters, as well as for clearing the way for an assault. Battlfield 2, front: USMC soldier, back: Tunguska Igla: Identical to the Russian missile of the same name, the Igla is a short-range antiaircraft missile designed to seriously damage or destroy low-flying aircraft and helicopters. HJ-8: The HJ-8 antitank missile was designed to defend against US, European, and Russian tanks. The "Red Arrow," as it's called, is a tube-launched, infrared-tracked, wire-guided missile. Wuzhuang Zhisheng-10: The WZ-10 was designed to give China an attack helicopter, which is something it previously lacked. It's armed with 57 mm rockets, antitank missiles, and a 23 mm gun. Zhisheng-8: This medium-sized Chinese transport helicopter is based on the French Super Frelon. It is fitted with two powerful 1,500 horsepower (1.1 MW) turboshaft engines and is capable of transporting 27 armed soldiers. Jian 10: This Chinese-designed and manufactured fighter-bomber is capable of handling air-superiority and ground-attack missions. It can carry air-to-air missiles and 500-kilogram bombs to complement its 30 mm internal cannon. MEC Vehicles T-90: The T-90 main battle tank is the successor to the problematic T-80 tank. However, the T-90 improves on its successor with a 125 mm cannon and an impressive defensive system. The optronic countermeasure device lets the tank detect and disrupt enemy targeting or range-finding devices. Tunguska M1: Designed for air defense, the Tunguska M1 is armed with eight SA-19 surface-to-air missiles for long-range air defense, as well as twin-barrel 30 mm cannons for close-in defense. GAZ 39371 Vodnik: The rugged Vodnik is the Russian answer to the American HMMWV. This high-mobility multipurpose vehicle is actually superior to the HMMWV in many ways. Additionally, it's fully amphibious (though not in the game) and has nearly two feet of ground clearance. FAV: Identical to the Chinese FAV, the MEC uses the fast attack vehicle for both airborne and special operations. It can be armed with 7.62 mm and 5.8 mm machine guns, or a mounted HJ-8 antitank missile launcher. BTR-90: This is the Russian Army's next-generation armored personnel carrier. The BTR-90 is larger than its predecessors and is armed with a 30 mm main gun, a 7.62 mm machine gun, a 30 mm grenade launcher, and a launcher for antitank missiles. Mil Mi-28 Havok: The Havok is the latest Russian attack helicopter, and it's capable of operating in all-weather and day-and-night conditions. It is armed with wire-guided antitank missiles and heat-seeking air-to-air missiles. It can also carry 80 mm rockets. Mil Mi-17 Hip: The Hip is the transport workhorse of the Russian Army. In addition to transport, this multirole helicopter can also provide air support thanks to external mountings that let it carry missiles, rockets, and bombs. Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum: The Fulcrum is an older fighter developed by Russia to compete with the F-15A. Export models to 3rd world countries are technologicaly inferior compared to US military aircraft and even the most recent MiG-29 designs are out dated and do not compete with the F-15C. The game incorrectly identifies the MiG-29 as an advanced aircraft desighed to counter the newer F-15 and F/A-18 models. The Fulcrum is maneuverable and formidable. Sukhoi Su-30 : The Su-30 is a two-seat long-range fighter-bomber built to replace earlier Soviet-era aircraft. Originally designed as a carrier-based aircraft, the SU-30 has adapted to become a powerful strike aircraft and fighter. D-30: The D-30 is identical to the Chinese Type 85 artillery piece. This 122 mm gun is an ideal weapon for taking out enemy troops and field shelters, as well as for clearing the way for an assault. HJ-8: Purchased from the Chinese, the HJ-8 antitank missile was designed to defend against US, European, and Russian tanks. The "Red Arrow," as it's called, is a tube-launched, infrared-tracked, wire-guided missile. Igla: Identical to the Chinese missile of the same name, the Igla is a short-range antiaircraft missile designed to seriously damage or destroy low-flying aircraft and helicopters. Ranks Main article: Battlefield 2 Ranks Ranked servers and recent exploits The Battlefield 2 Ranked server system allows for a means of comparing players. According to EA Games: Ranked servers will be where the hardcore bump heads and clash knives. All Ranked Servers will be configured to provide the definitive competitive Battlefield experience. Friendly Fire is on, and TK will be punished by default, so all players will need to use their tools wisely and watch out for the tools that have been deployed by their teammates. If, for example, you have a hankering to be the best sniper to ever stare down the sights of an SVD in Battlefield 2, these are the servers on which you will have to walk the walk. If you'd rather not spend your time trying to figure out where the world's #1 sniper is popping your melon from, see below. Ranked servers will be heavily administrated and have Punkbuster on. The integrity of the stats system is of paramount importance to EA Games (and of course to those participating in it) and so we will be monitoring things constantly. At the end of the day, Ranked servers will be a safe, regulated environment on which the most competitive players will be spending their time. If this environment doesn't sound right for you, that's great. That's what Unranked servers are for. Recent concern has arisen within the community, however, regarding exploits of this ranking system. Users have been known to use an exploit known as 'stat padding' where they will simply kill a player, revive them, and then kill them again, thus gaining an extraordinary amount of global points. The Battlefield 2 community has been vocal with raising concerns to EA Games regarding these exploits. Sean Decker, the Executive Producer, has recently responded to an email about this, and mentions deleting scores and awards ("or have more drastic actions taken") of exploiting players. More problematic, from EA's point of view, is that some clans are hiring ranked servers from authorised third-party providers and then 'institutionalizing rules which forbid normal play' - whereby players who do anything other than stat padding are kicked from the server - to the extent that the company has proposed delisting server companies who do not terminate accounts of customers using their servers in this way. Bugs Battlefield 2 suffered from several serious bugs at release many blame to be contributed to the publisher shipping the game too early thus not allowing sufficient QA testing and engine optimization to be done. Some are listed below. During gameplay, the names of friendly soldiers usually appear in blue text. Red text is used for enemies. For unknown reasons, sometimes a friendly soldier's name will appear in red text. This usually results in the quick death of the unlucky soldier, which is also treated as a teamkill by the server. (Any teamkill, punished or unpunished, results in a four point penalty.) This bug is believed to be caused by an unsuccessful auto team switch by the server or host. As of patch 1.03, it is still not, or there are no plans to, fix the bug. A reverse of the above bug: sometimes an enemy's name, which is supposed to be red, will show up blue. This results in a case of mistaken identity that allows the enemy to get in close for a kill, since the player will get confused and be hesitant to shoot. A side effect is that the enemy will also constantly show up as a blue dot in the minimap, pinpointing his location. Occasionally this can even result in players from opposite teams being able to enter the same vehicle. Occasionally, the blame for one or more teamkills is attributed to the wrong person. For example; if a player is the driver of a jeep with two passengers, and a friendly transport helicopter, with six teammates on board, crashes into the player and kills everyone, the player is sometimes deemed to have teamkilled eight people, resulting in a 32 point penalty and typically being banned from the server. The infamous sound loop bug from Battlefield 1942 wherethe gun sound effect will keep playing after you've finished firing alerting everyone to your position makes a return. The server will sometimes break your connection for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Whether this is actually a bug or just bad netcode is unknown to the editor. Sometimes helicopter machine guns will stop doing damage to targets. None of these bugs have been confirmed to be fixed in the 1.12 patch. Patches Patch 1.01 was the first patch, which however introduced more problems than it fixed (see Patch 1.02 below). Patch 1.02 was released to fix memory leaks and other bugs, the former which were so problematic that at one stage the official Battlefield 2 website was advising users to use the unpatched 'out of the box' version of the game instead of upgrading to Patch 1.01. To fix several issues and to improve the game, Patch 1.03 was released on October 4, 2005. Among other things, it contains a new map called Wake Island 2007, an updated version of a famous Battlefield 1942 map. In lieu of the release of the expansion Battlefield 2: Special Forces, Patch 1.12 is being released alongside with Special Forces. This is a compatibility patch which mainly allows current Battlefield 2 players to retain their ranks while playing Special Forces, and also to allow the use of weapons unlocked from the original Battlefield 2 in Special Forces. It must be noted however, that the patch that comes with Special Forces is not the most updated version; a few days after the release of Special Forces, EA has released a newer Patch 1.12 over the Internet. This version of the patch mainly removes the use of grappling hooks and ziplines in the map Iron Gator. All Battlefield 2 users are to install this patch regardless whether they have installed Special Forces or not. The previous games in the Battlefield franchise (Battlefield 1942 & Battlefield Vietnam) were also plagued by bugs and gameplay-balance issues in the early released versions, and only became fully stable after a series of patches in the months following the release.
